Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations begin
MANILA - Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao said Saturday that negotiations for his possible fight against former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. have already started.
"Nag-uusap na sila nina Bob Arum at Mayweather promoter. Nag-uusap na sila (Bob Arum and Mayweather's promoter are now talking)," Pacquiao said in a phone interview with Vice-President Noli de Castro over radio dzMM.
Pacquiao, who had just arrived in General Santos City, said he will be informed of the initial talks’ results by next month.
In a recent interview, the Filipino boxer said his camp was not trying to force a fight with Mayweather. He said that he would have to wait for a challenge from Mayweather before going into formal talks for their fight.
Pacquiao boasted that his fights score more on pay per view.
Coach Freddie Roach had admitted that they would be engaged in very tough negotiations with Mayweather because the American boxer believes he is the attraction and deserves more money.
Roach, however, pointed out that Pacquiao has all the leverage in the possible match up because of his boxing style, which brings in more viewers.
The Home Box Office (HBO) Sports on Friday announced that Pacquiao's 12th-round technical knockout of Puerto Rican Cotto last weekend was the top-drawing pay-per-view of 2009 with 1.24 million purchases worth US$70 million in revenue.
The figure was way higher than the 1.05 million pay-per-view generated by the recent fight between Mayweather and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who had also been beaten by Pacquiao.
Arum said the Pacquiao-Cotto pay-per-view signals a good start for negotiations with the Mayweather camp. He said the likely division for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would be the 147-pound welterweight class.
Pacquiao snatched the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt after scoring a TKO against Cotto during their fight over the weekend at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The Filipino boxer also made history for bagging seven titles in seven weight divisions.
Running for congressman
Pacquiao, meanwhile, confirmed to De Castro that he is running for congressman in Sarangani province in 2010.
The boxer was welcomed by a huge crowd upon his arrival at the General Santos International Airport.
He said he is travelling to Sarangani province to witness the filing of the certificates of candidacy of "my mayors."
Pacquiao said he will file his own COC very soon.
The boxer said he will run under his own local political party, the People's Champ Movement. He added that he was not yet sure if his party would coalesce with a national party.
Pacquiao would be facing in the elections Roy Chiongbian, a top executive of Easter Shipping Lines, who has been chosen by the political family as their official candidate in 2010.
The businessman is the youngest brother of incumbent Sarangani Rep. Erwin Chiongbian. Their mother, Priscilla Chiongbian, is the provincial governor.
The Chiongbian family had said that they do not think Pacquiao's popularity in boxing would be enough to bring him to victory in 2010.

Manny's political ambition
As a boxer, manny is a phenomenon. As a politician, he still has to prove himself. As a kabayan my unsolicited advice to him is to enter politics after retiring from boxing. I believe his chances of winning then will be greater.
Popularity and victories in
Popularity and victories in the field of sports are not enough for a person to enter congress. Manny would be better off remaining in boxing. The work of a congressman is to enact laws. Manny has no background for legislative functions. He would just lose his hard earned honor in boxing when people see him unproductive in congress. Just like Lito Lapid in the senate who just sleeps in sessions and wastes the taxpayers money, he would also look ridiculous and pathetic in the house. Manny, for the love of the Filipinos, please stay away from politics.

Politics Not Meant For Pacquiao
I am a rabid Manny Pacquiao fan, but as far as his political ambitions are concerned, he should put it aside. Now is not the right time to enter politics in the light of his impending fight with Floyd Mayweather. Also take into acccount the controversy he has been involved in with a starlet. He has doomed his own chances in the forthcoming elections, espescially it is in his wifes turf wherein he has presumably lost a lot of support. Take your time Manny, beat Mayweather first then go into politics after three years and you will have better chances. Right now I'd say your chances of winnning are slim man.

Pacquiao will lose to Mayweather
If Manny lose his fight with Mayweather or his next opponent, God will make him lose even in the coming election and also he will lose all his blessings and gift of boxing. God hates adultery, Jesus said if you look with a woman or a man with a lust in your eyes, you commit adultery. Let's just wait if he lose his next fight and his political career. If he lose then, that means he commits adultery, that is my prayer daily for him. I feel sorry for Jinkee she is just a good wife and she looks much better than Krista who is a home wrecker.
