Martinez: Mayweather, not Pacquiao, as next opponent

MANILA, Philippines — World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion Sergio Martinez declared he will most likely battle the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Jr., over Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao next.

"Manny Pacquiao is too small. It would be a mismatch. I don't believe that it will ever happen," Martinez said in a BoxingScene.com article.

Argentinean Martinez retained his WBC middleweight belt after knocking out American Paul Williams with an impressive second-round punch, on Saturday (Sunday, in Manila).

Rallying in a rematch, Martinez pounced Williams at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He now holds a 46-2-2 record, with 25 knockout (KO) wins.

The 35-year-old boxer sought to avenge his loss to Williams in their bout, December last year.

Instead of Pacquiao, 5' 10" Martinez then suggested he might rather find Mayweather a better prospect for his next opponent.

“Floyd Mayweather? Most likely, that would be a fight that we could make. He's a great fighter, and I would love to do it,” he said.

The 5-division champion Mayweather keeps a stunning 41-0 record, with 25 KO wins. He has even been eyed to battle Filipino boxer Pacquiao this year, until negotiations fell through twice.

Meanwhile, Martinez's manager Sampson Lewkowicz, added that Pacquiao might not stand a match to the “Maravilla.”

"Sergio would never fight Manny Pacquiao because (Martinez) would knock him out,” he said.

In The Ring magazine's pound-for-pound rankings, Martinez only stands 6th to top placer Pacquiao.

On the other hand, 5' 6 1/2" Pacquiao recently bagged his 8th world title after defeating 5'10" Antonio Margarito for the WBC super welterweight belt. He won via unanimous decision in their 12-round bout last November 13 (Nov. 14, in Manila) boosting his record to 52-3-2.

Martinez, Hopkins, Mayweather, Mosley, Calzaghe these fightersmake will make an interesting fight with Manny.

Never say Manny can't ! ! !

Let me tell you this; Floyd will never accept a challenge from Martinez… Why? 1. In the middle weight class, Martinez would be too strong for him & would have the speed to keep up w/ Floyd. Not only is Martinez fast, he also throws a lot of power punches which will overwhelm Floyd. 2. Martinez is a southpaw. We all know that Floyd have problems w/ southpaws in the past, especially those southpaws who are fast.

For Martinez's sake, don't ever tell Manny that Martinez said, he's too small & that it would be a disadvantage for Manny. Especially them saying that Martinez would knock out Manny! That wouldn't be a good idea coz Manny might just accept the challenge & try to prove everyone wrong again. Manny's heart is what makes him dangerous & you can never count him out. Even though I feel that Sergio has the speed to keep up & is way too big & heavy for our people’s champ, I do feel that Manny will figure out his style & beat Sergio at his own game.

Manny to me is one of the wonders of the world. Just when you would never expect it, Manny would surprise you. If Manny does fights Sergio for the ninth weight class belt, at a catch weight even though Sergio would still have the size & weight advantage in the middleweight division, Manny has the skills, speed & power to beat him. Manny has trained w/ skilled middleweight fighters like Shawn Porter & Porter will even tell you that Manny is fast enough to get out of trouble when cornered & strong enough to fight at that weight level. So I suggest that the Martinez clan to not talk down on Manny coz the little man's pride & ego might just accept the challenge & have to embarrass another bigger man. Remember never say Manny can't!!!!

But I do agree in what Koncz had to say about Manny. He should just go back to his comfortable weight division which is welterweight, even though he does come in almost as a jr. welterweight. I feel the same way that Manny should just give up the heavier division if he doesn’t want to wear his body out. I mean, I do still want to see him fight 2 to 3 more times maybe even 4 more times before he hangs up his gloves. It’s not that he can’t beat these bigger guys coz he’s already proven to many haters wrong. But if he decides to test the waters & climb the ladder to prove himself even more, his body will take too much punishment & he’ll just wear himself out sooner. I know Manny can beat Sergio Martinez but I rather have him stay in the welterweight division. If Mayweather won’t step up like a man, I’d like to see Manny fight either Berto, Bradley, Mosley or even Marquez part III at a catch weight, just to shut him up.

Pacquiao should not fight

Pacquiao should not fight Martinez simply because he is just too big. Not that he can't beat Sergio but just he is just physically mismatch to Sergio. If ever Manny decided to fight him it is because Mayweather will not fight him and that will definitely his last fight. I will bet on him because I am sure he can beat Sergio Martinez but it will be a lot harder fight and physically painful for Manny. I just hope Mayweather decides to fight him and then Manny retires win or lose.

Like Arum said earlier, there

5

Like Arum said earlier, there won't be another David vs Goliath match since they don't want Pacquiao to be injured. However, if ever Pacman fights Martinez there's no doubt Martinez will fall. After Margarito, no one doubts that Pacman can handle bigger opponents. As long as he has his speed, punching power and the ability to hit from any angle, Pacquiao will be very, very, very hard to beat.
