Sonsona vacates title after failing to make weight
MANILA -- Youngest Filipino champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona has vacated his World Boxing Organization junior bantamweight title after failing to make the 115-pound limit during the weigh in.
According to Philboxing.com, Sonsona (14-0, 12 knock outs) weighed 117.6 pounds Saturday morning in Canada, the very same day the fight will take place.
Based on governing rules of the Ontario Athletic Commission, the official weigh-in takes place the same day as the fight.
His opponent Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez (22-7-1, 11 KO’s, WBO#15) weighed in at exactly 115 pounds.
The fight is still on. Should Hernandez win the match, he will take home the vacated title.
Sonsona’s coaches and management did not force him to lose the extra weight as further dehydration during the fight could put him at risk.
They said there are plans to move Marvin Sonsona up in weight after the fight.
Also included in the fight card is Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales, who is making his Canadian debut against Mexican Miguel Gonzales.

At least they got balls
I tend to agree with the post below that the kid's handlers are likely to blame for their ward failing to make weight.
On the other hand, I commend them for putting the foot down when they have to chose whether or not to risk the welfare of their boxer by forcing him to lose more than they think he should. Although they apparently lacked the needed skills to foresee the situation, I think they made the right choice.
Perhaps it is time to look into conducting training and certification of boxing handlers and trainers. Lest they end up no better than the average sabongeros.

It is a pity to a rising boxer like Marvin Sonsona to loose his title without a fight due to the weight problems. Coaching and management staff should be blamed for this mess. There is no justification for this inefficiency of Marvin Sonsona's handlers.
It is high time that Marvin Sonsona must look for somebody who can manage and can look for his future.
We are calling the attention of GAB Chairman Eric Buhain to investigate this matter and so that appropriate action must done.
