Provodnikov next logical choice for Pacquiao, says Arum
‘Marquez doesn’t want Pacquiao’
MANILA – Boxing promoter Bob Arum has outlined the next possible opponents of fighting Congressman Manny Pacquiao in the event he beats Brandon Rios on Sunday.
"If you asked people who they would want Manny to fight next, I mean, everybody would say [Floyd] Mayweather," said Arum in a Ring TV report by Lem Satterfield.
"Next to Mayweather, if you would put the No. 2 choice, they would probably say Provodnikov. I mean, he's the next logical guy."
Provodnikov, who recently defeated Mike Alvarado for the WBO junior welterweight crown, was a former sparring partner of Pacquiao.
Arum said a Pacquiao-Provodnikov fight is a more workable option compared to possible rematch bouts against Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley.
"Who else would you want Manny to fight? Marquez again? Marquez isn't willing to fight," said Arum.
"Bradley? Marquez is not going to do it any better [in a fifth fight with Pacquiao] than he already has, because he was about to get knocked out when he threw that punch."
Arum said he would love to arrange a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight.
He, however, told Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that more negotiations will have to be done for the fight to materialize.
Arum cited that Mayweather is now under contract with Showtime, while Pacquiao fights for HBO.
