Mayol claims WBC title, Sonsona draws
MANILA – After failing in four attempts to become a world champion, Rodel “Batang Mandaue” Mayol finally clinched the World Boxing Council (WBC) junior flyweight belt after beating defending champion Edgar Sosa.
Mayol defeated Sosa via technical knockout in Round 2 of their bout Saturday in Chiappas, Mexico (Sunday in Manila).
According to FightNews.com, Sosa was hurt by an unintentional head butt. “He was dropped again when action resumed and the referee waved it off moments later,” the online report added.
Sosa, who sustained a fractured cheekbone, complained that the head butt was intentional. ““The only way Rodel Mayol could beat me was by intentionally fouling me. He should have been disqualified,” he remarked.
Sosa’s manager, Jacques Deschamps, echoed his fighter’s laments. “The result has to be changed to a non-contest because the intentional head-butt clearly provoked the final outcome.” Deschamps also called for a Mayol-Sosa rematch.
Mayol improved to 26-4-1, with 20 knockouts while Sosa slumped to 37-6, with 21 KOs.
Sonsona vacates title
Meanwhile, “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona, who vacated his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior bantamweight title after failing to make the weight, saw his fight against Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez end in a draw Saturday in Canada (Sunday in Manila).
The scores were 115-113, 113-115, 114-114. The WBO junior bantamweight title remained vacant because of the draw.
Sonsona is still unbeaten at 14-0-1, with 12 KOs while Hernandez has a 22-7-2 (with 11 KOs) record.
The 19-year-old General Santos City native weighed 117.6 lbs. on the day of the fight, exceeding the weight limit of 115 lbs. Hernandez, meantime, weighed in at exactly 115 lbs.
In an earlier eight-round match held at the Casino Rama in Ontario, Filipino Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales won over Mexican Miguel Gonzalez via majority decision, 77-75, 78-74, 76-76.
Morales remained undefeated at 14-0, with 8 KOs while Gonzalez fell to 10-2, with 4 KOs. – With reports from PhilBoxing.com and FightNews.com
