RP team 46th in Chess Olympiad

Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales outplayed Argentine GM Fernando Peralta in the closing round of the 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany as the RP team settled for 46th place.

With Gonzales’ win, the RP team scored a 2.5-1.5 win against its final opponent Argentina.

Teammates Wesley So, Darwin Laylo and John Paul Gomez settled for draws against their respective foes.

The RP team garnered a total of 13 points after 11 rounds of competition.

The country’s best performance in the Olympiad was seventh in the 26th Olympiad held in Thessaoniki, Greece in 1988. The RP team then was headed by Torre and GM Rogelio Antonio Jr.

In the 2006 Olympiad in Turin, Italy, the Philippines finished 44th overall, with a lineup that included Torre, Antonio and So.

Armenia was again named the Olympiad’s top placer, followed by Israel and the US.
