Cotto to target Margarito's right eye
MANILA, Philippines - Miguel Cotto is planning to target the right eye of Antonio Margarito when the two boxers face off in their December 3 rematch at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
Margarito had to undergo surgery on his right eye, which was battered and damaged after his 2010 unanimous decision loss to Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
Cotto says he has no qualms about taking advantage of Margarito's surgically repaired eye.
"I don't have any respect for him. I am going to take advantage of his eye, like he took advantage of the plaster," Cotto said in the second episode of 24/7: Cotto-Margarito.
Margarito had defeated Cotto in their first bout via an 11th round technical knockout. The result became controversial, however, after Margarito came under suspicion for using illegal handwraps.
"He played with my health, I'll play with his," Cotto said of the Mexican boxer.
But Margarito is unconcerned about Cotto's intentions, saying, "If he thinks I had plaster, it will hurt like I was using plaster, and he will know it."
Margarito's trainer, Robert Garcia, is already preparing for Cotto's tactics.
"They're gonna look to land on his eye. I'm telling the sparring partners, throw more left hooks," Garcia said.
"We keep training like it's nothing. My eye is in perfect condition," Margarito said. "It's fine. If it wasn't in perfect condition, believe me, I wouldn't fight."
