Lee explodes as UE reaches PCCL Elite Eight
MANILA – The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors used their speed to neutralize the height advantage of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in the 2009 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Sweet 16.
The Warriors ran away with a 105-86 win over the Webmasters Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Paul Lee orchestrated the Warriors’ offense with precision, finishing with the tournament’s first triple-double.
Lee, a member of this season’s UAAP Mythical Five, scored a game-high 31 points on top of 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Warriors broke the game wide open right from the opening tip en route to the victory that put them in the Elite Eight.
UE, which played sans head coach Lawrence Chongson, joined fellow UAAP teams Ateneo Blue Eagles, Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws and NCAA squads San Beda Red Lions and Letran Knights.
The Warriors allowed UC’s 6-10 behemoth Junmar Fajardo to score 24 points and pull down 12 boards but they forced him to commit six turnovers.
The Warriors will face familiar nemesis FEU in the Elite Eight. The Tamaraws held off the Arellano University Chiefs early last week to book a slot in the next round.
Both teams squared off in the UAAP Final Four where the Warriors defeated the Tamaraws twice to barge into the Finals.
The PCCL Sweet 16 resumes on Monday at Ormoc City, Leyte where UAAP’s fourth seed, University of Santo Tomas, battles Jose Rizal University and NCAA champion San Sebastian meets University of San Carlos. – Alder T. Almo
