Darchinyan wants rematch with Donaire

MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Vic Darchinyan wants a rematch against world super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in his continued quest to prove that he is still an elite fighter.

Since suffering his first defeat at Donaire’s hands in 2007, Darchinyan has gone through some ups and downs. While winning titles at bantamweight and flyweight, he also lost consecutive bouts to Anselmo Moreno and Shinsuke Yamanaka.

A decision victory over Luis del Valle at the super bantamweight division got his career back on track somewhat, and Darchinyan said he is now seeking a fight against either Donaire or Abner Mares.

“Nonito Donaire calls people out, calls everyone out, but he doesn’t want to fight me again,” Darchinyan said in an interview with Tha Boxing Voice. “He beat me by one punch, but doesn’t want to give me a rematch.” [http://thaboxingvoice.com/darchinyan-a-free-agent-looks-for-rematches-with-donaire-and-mares-even-a-santa-cruz-fight/7068]

“I was the champion when we fought but he’s a chicken and doesn’t call my name out,” he added.

Donaire crushed the erstwhile unbeaten Darchinyan with one monstrous punch when they fought in July 2007, which saw the Armenian boxer lose his IBF and IBO flyweight belts.

“Abner Mares beat me by one point, and I slipped when they said he knocked me down. He also doesn’t want to fight me. But I want rematches with both, or anyone that’s in 122,” Darchinyan said.

But neither Donaire nor Mares have shown any inclination that they want a rematch against Darchinyan. The two top fighters at super bantamweight are more keen about fighting each other, although that seems unlikely since they are under different promotional companies.

Darchinyan insists that he does not care about a potential mega-fight between the two, however.

“I don’t know who’s better. I just want to fight them both. I’m more interested in fighting them than them fighting each other,” he said.
