Roach backtracks on Marquez drugs claim
MANILA, Philippines – Boxing coach Freddie Roach took back his claim that Juan Manuel Marquez may have been using performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).
Roach said he was merely joking when he commented on Marquez’s bulky physique in a USA Today report.
“I was only joking,” he was quoted by Fight Hype as saying.
However, Roach remained skeptical about Marquez’s muscle mass.
Roach, who is helping Manny Pacquiao prepare for his 4th clash against the Mexican, said he has been working out daily but never got the same amount of muscle as Marquez.
“The thing is, he put on a lot of muscle and if you can do that by weight lifting, that's amazing. I workout everyday and I don't get those kind of muscles,” said the boxing hall-of-famer.
Roach earlier claimed that Marquez may have been doing something unusual to bulk up quickly.
What roused Roach’s suspicions on Marquez’s physique are the Mexican’s ties with Angel “Memo” Hernandez, who reportedly supplied PEDs to former track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery.
"If [his body] is natural, I will kiss his ass,'' Roach told Jon Saraceno of USA Today.
