UST scores V-League crown
MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Tigresses swept the Adamson Lady Falcons to win the Shakey’s V-League second conference title at The Arena in San Juan City Tuesday.
According to V-League.ph, the Tigresses battled their way back from a setback in the first set to eke out a tough 23-25, 25-12, 27-25, 25-19 win against the Lady Falcons.
The Tigresses were powered by the double-digit contributions from Aiza Maizo and Maru Banaticla, who both churned out 16 hits.
The Tigresses earlier posted a 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21 victory in the best-of-three finals opener.
The victory is UST’s 5th championship in 8 finals appearances. The Tigresses won the V-League first conference title in June.
Team effort
“It was a total team effort. Even if we lost the first set and were down in the fourth, I told them to stay focused and help each other,” said UST coach Cesael delos Santos.
Maizo copped the MVP award, becoming the third UST player to win the plum after Mary Jean Balse and Venus Bernal.
“I didn’t expect to sweep both awards and help the team win the crown,” remarked Maizo.
Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tams finished in third place after posting a sweep over the San Sebastian Lady Stags on Tuesday. The Lady Tams defeated the reigning 5-time NCAA champions, 25-20, 10-25, 25-11, 21-25, 15-10.
The third place result is FEU’s best-ever finish in V-League.
