MANILA -- Rain or Shine erased a 20-point deficit and foiled Jimmy Alapag’s possible game-winning triple to complete a 95-93 come-from-behind win over Talk ‘N Text Wednesday night in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ryan Arana unloaded 11 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Elasto Painters’ second-half uprising to post their first back-to-back wins in the tournament for a 3-7 win-loss mark.

Jeff Chan added 14 points while Jireh Ibanes and Eddie Laure provided the intensity that was lacking early in the game that helped Rain or Shine to get back in the contest after trailing 34-54, early in the third quarter.

“This is a big win for us. Defense brought us back in the second half,” said Elasto Painters head coach Caloy Garcia who missed the services of Sol Mercado and Marcy Arellano due to injuries.

“We lacked intensity in the first half that’s what we talked about at halftime. We inserted Eddie and Jireh and the intensity picked up in the third,” he added.

It was Rain or Shine’s second huge win in the tournament. It also dealt the only loss of Alaska in the conference, 81-86, in the first round.

The Tropang Texters, who came back from a 30-point hole against Burger King in their 118-105 win, appeared to have the game in the bag early when they led as much as 20 points.

Giants slay Tigers

Purefoods Tender Juicy also notched its first back-to-back wins in the tournament after beating the skidding Coca-Cola, 88-79, to tie Talk ‘N Text for fourth spot with 6-4 mark.

James Yap poured in 17 of his 22 points in the second half while Peter June Simon unloaded 11 of his 18 in the final canto to lead the Giants’ breakaway in the fourth period and handed the Tigers their sixth straight loss for a league-worst 1-9 slate.

“We really prepared hard for this. We wanted to break the (win-loss-win-loss) trend and it came at a right time we’re celebrating an event,” said Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio referring to the franchise’s 10th year celebration of partnership with Hormel Foods International Corporation.

Larry Rodriguez had 21 points and 9 rebounds for Coke while rookie Chris Ross added 13 markers.
