MANILA, Philippines – A racial insult allegedly sparked a riot between the San Beda College (SBC) basketball team and the San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) volleyball squad's coach.

San Beda College coach Frankie Lim told ANC on Friday that members of the men's volleyball team insulted one of his players, Nigerian Ola Ade-ogun.

“It all started when the men's volleyball team threw a racial slur against our player Ola while he was walking,” he said.

According to Jose Mari Lacson, management committee representative of San Beda in the NCAA, their Nigerian recruit was called "unggoy" or monkey by a San Sebastian College-Recoletos player.

Lacson said he advised Ade-ogun not to pay attention to the name-calling.

Ade-ogun also told his coach about the incident, prompting Lim to approach the SSC-R volleyball team.

“Pinagsabihan ko, I told them, you're not supposed to do that to foreigners. Nung maanit na, I asked one of the players to call the coach (SSC-R head coach Roger Gorayeb) to fix it,” said Lim.

Gorayeb's role

Lim claimed that Gorayeb was shouting when he came out.

He said he accosted the volleyball coach for raising his voice.

“Tapos biglang tumalikod tapos minura ako. So I followed him inside the court and all of a sudden he threw a punch at me. After noon, nagkagulo na,” claimed Lim.

The brawl took place at the San Beda Gym in Mendiola. It broke out in the middle of a women’s volleyball match between Perpetual Help Altas and SSC-R.

Melee ensues
Witnesses said punches were thrown, with Gorayeb falling to the ground after getting hit by NCAA Season 87 Finals MVP Dave Marcelo. A San Sebastian College-Recoletos player was also injured.

“Ang nakakainis lang dito, they're not in their school, andoon sila sa campus namin tapos nagsasabi sila ng kung anu-ano sa players namin, it's not right,” said Lim.

Gorayeb is reportedly planning to file a lawsuit.

“He can do what he wants, I didn't start the fight, I was there to fix it... hindi ko alam kung paano siyang magdedemanda,” said Lim.

ANC tried to get the side of Gorayeb but he could not be reached during the ANC interview.

Lacson said the fight was quickly stopped. He added the school will investigate the incident. -- with a report from Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
