MANILA, Philippines – De La Salle University (DLSU) continued its mastery of Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) in UAAP women’s volleyball with a 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 win at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
It was the Lady Archers’ 8th straight win over the Katipunan-based team who played without head coach Roger Gorayeb.
De La Salle veterans Abigail Maraño, Michelle Gumabao and Cha Cruz rose to the occasion but so did Lady Archer rookie and Cruz’s younger sister Camille Cruz.
After losing the first set, De La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus fielded Camille. And she worked wonders for the Lady Archers.
“Nandoon kasi ‘yung experience ni Camille sa larong Maynila kaya ipinasok ko siya sa second set. Nandoon ‘yung material niya,” said De Jesus.
Maraño scored 18 points and 2 blocks, while Gumabao made 16 hits and 4 blocks. Cha Cruz had 14 points and 3 service aces.
De La Salle (2-0) is now tied for the lead in the standings with Far Eastern University (FEU).
FEU beat University of the Philippines (UP), 25-17, 25-10, 25-16, also on Saturday.
Mayjorie Roxas had 16 points and 3 blocks and Rosemarie Vargas added 15 points with 3 service aces for the Lady Tamaraws.
In the men’s division, National University (NU) streaked to its 3rd straight win also at the expense of Ateneo, 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.
Reigning 4-time champion University of Santo Tomas (UST) dropped De La Salle, 26-24, 25-12, 25-17, for only its first win in the season.
