Roach happy with clear win, if no KO
HOLLYWOOD – Freddie Roach wants a knockout but said Saturday he’d settle for anything close to it.
His personal profile Twitter, in fact, clearly says, “A win’s a win.”
On Saturday at his Wild Card Gym, Roach said he’d be happy if Manny Pacquiao beats Juan Manuel Marquez on the scorecards.
“As long as it’s a clear win that’s fine,” Roach told Filipino scribes who were allowed inside the gym only after Pacquiao was done with his sparring.
Roach ordered a closed-door sparring for Pacquiao because last Thursday the gym was packed like it was fans’ day.
Roach watched from his corner, his arms resting on the ropes, as Pacquiao shadow-boxed like Marquez was standing right in front of him.
“He’s my new guy,” Roach said motioning toward the Filipino superstar.
Later on, the five-time Trainer of the Year said Marquez will see the Pacquiao he’d never seen in their previous three fights lasting 36 rounds.
Pacquiao has knocked down Marquez four times in the past but there’s never been a knockout.
“I don’t think he’s met the new Manny Pacquiao,” Roach said, this time referring to Marquez.
“In the third fight the adjustments were there but there were distractions. So that didn’t count. He will see the new Manny Pacquiao,” said Roach.
The world will have to wait and see.
