MANILA -- Barangay Ginebra leaned on Ronald Tubid’s offense to knock off Barako Bull, 88-76 for its second straight win in the KFC-Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Playing with an injured left index finger, Tubid hit the 30-point mark for the second straight game to carry the scoring cudgels of the injury-plagued Kings, who missed the services of Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Celino Cruz and Junthy Valenzuela.

The former UE Red Warrior’s performance was a follow up of his 33-point outburst against Coca-Cola. This helped his team move up in team standings with a 7-3 mark.

“Ronald is playing with an injured finger and yet he scored 33 against Coke. Tonight, he hit 30. What more can I ask for,” said Ginebra head coach Jong Uichico, who also got sold contributions from veteran Johnny Abarrientos, JC Intal, and Eric Menk.

“This game has an all-out attitude. Patay kung patay ang attitude ng players,” he added.

Abarrientos had 6 points and 6 assists in the game while Menk and Intal combined for 32 points that backed Tubid’s explosive game.

Menk, a one-time MVP in the league, had his best offensive game yet in the tournament with 18 points while Intal chipped in 14.

Leo Najorda paced the Energy Boosters with 14 points while Yousif Aljamal and Richard Alonzo added 12 apiece for coach Leo Isaac. Barako Bull absorbed its seventh straight loss to fall to 2-9 mark.

With two of their top guards on the sidelines, the Kings turned to Abarrientos, the 1996 MVP winner, in quarterbacking their set plays.

“Imagine Johnny being out for one or two years but he can still play at this level. He may not take the grind of everyday games and may have been a step slower, pero maasahan pa rin,” said Uichico of Abarrientos.

Lucky 9 for SMB

San Miguel Beer extended its game-winning streak to 9 games after burying Sta. Lucia Realty, 110-94, to move half a game behind Alaska (9-1) with 9-2 mark.

The Beermen needed a strong third-quarter showing to pull away in the game and move close for one of the two automatic semifinal seats.

Holding a slim 47-46 edge at halftime, San Miguel poured in 33 points in the third period and held the Realtors to just 19 to enter the final period with an 80-65 cushion.

Dondon Hontiveros led the way for the Beermen with 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field to lead the balanced attack of the team.

Nelbert Omolon led the Realtors with 20 markers. Sta. Lucia absorbed its second straight defeat to slide down to 5-5.

Aces dump Gilas

Two-time MVP Willie Miller scored 21 points to lead Alaska to a convincing 130-99 win over Smart Gilas developmental team in a tune-up game, the latter’s worst loss so far in the tournament.

Reynel Hugnatan added 18 while Sonny Thoss and Joe Devance added 15 and 14 markers respectively for the league-leading Aces. LA Tenorio and Mark Borboran each had 10 points each for coach Tim Cone.

JV Casio paced the aspirants with 24 points while Rabeh Al-Hussani contributed 16 for Smart Gilas, which now totes a 3-5 mark in the tournament as a guest team.
