Farenas in good condition for Gamboa fight
MANILA, Philippines – Filipino fighter Michael Farenas will be the underdog against undefeated Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa when they fight on December 8, but his trainer believes an upset is not out of the question.
Former world champion Gerry Peñalosa told Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing that Farenas plans to shock Gamboa when they fight on Saturday for an interim super featherweight title.]
“Farenas has trained really well,” Peñalosa told Nathanielsz. “He’s in very good condition.”
Peñalosa also said Farenas is “quietly confident of stunning” Gamboa, who has an immaculate record of 21 wins with 16 knockouts.
Farenas, meanwhile, has a record of 34 wins with three losses and four draws. Since his last loss to Marlon Aguilar in May 2010, Farenas has won seven fights, though his most recent bout was a technical draw with Takashi Uchiyama in July.
Gamboa, meanwhile, will be fighting for the first time since September 2011, when he defeated Daniel Ponce de Leon via a technical decision.
