GSP denies demanding $50M for Silva fight
MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is not demanding $50 million to fight middleweight king Anderson “The Spider” Silva of Brazil.
In an interview with 985Sports.ca, St-Pierre denied a report from the MMA Beat that he wanted a $50-million payday for the fight against Silva.
“I have not been informed of this. It is not true,” St-Pierre said. “Nobody told me about it. I am in France now. I have not seen the article, I will not comment.”
In an episode of the MMA Beat, reporter Mike Straka cited sources “very close to Georges” that the welterweight king, who allegedly makes “close to $8 million a fight,” plans to ask for $50 million to fight Silva.
“Because he said that Georges has 10 fights left in his career at $8 million a fight. But he believes that Anderson could actually hurt him, could physically hurt him and end his career,” Straka explained.
“So to take that chance, he wants $50 million and that’s exactly the number he’s going to Dana White with,” he added.
Silva has made no secret of his desire to fight St-Pierre in what will be the biggest money fight in UFC history, a bout that will pit two pound-for-pound kings against each other.
St-Pierre, however, is not so keen on the fight as he is just coming off a successful return from a knee injury and has said that he wants to take some time off before making a decision.
