Rousing start for PhilSCA chessers in SCUAA-NCR
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA) Iron Eagles got off to a rousing start in the first two rounds of the 26th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA)-National Capital Region chess championships.
PhilSCA scored a 2-2 draw against the heavily favored Rizal Technological University (RTU) in the first round, then subdued the Philippine Normal University (PNU) in the second round.
“So far so good,” said team captain Jesus Jalmasco. “We are looking forward to a new banner year for the PhilSCA chess team.”
Jalmasco defeated RTU’s Rafael Cayanan after 39 moves of Budapest and PNU’s John Christopher Ambong after 48 moves of Colle System Opening.
In their second round matches, Simon Delos Reyes toppled Christian Abasata after 35 moves of English Opening, while Dean Fernandez walloped Jethro Panubet after 30 moves of Queen’s Gambit declined.
PhilSCA will be up against defending champion Polytechnic University of the Philippines in the next round.
SCUAA-NCR is composed of seven participating schools: PhilSCA, PNU, RTU, PUP, Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology, Technological University of the Philippines, and Marikina Polytechnic College. -- By Marlon Bernardino
