Cagara joining Guirado, Azkals vs Singapore
MANILA, Philippines – Danish-Filipino football player Dennis Cagara will be able to join the Azkals when they play the Philippines’ Suzuki Cup home game against Singapore on Saturday.
Cagara, whose defensive presence helped the Azkals crush Myanmar en route to a semis qualification, has been allowed by German Third Division Club Karlsruher to join the Philippine team at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
He will be flying to Manila on Friday together with fellow Azkals player Angel Guirado, who was also released by Indian club Salgaocar for the Suzuki Cup semis.
“They will play in the home game (if selected). I am trying to get their plane tickets so they can be back in Manila at least by Friday,” liaison officer Ace Bright said in Suzuki Cup’s official website.
Cagara and Guirado are expected to play major roles in the Azkals’ semifinal showdown against the Singapore Lions, whom the Filipinos defeated twice in successive friendlies.
Guirado thanked team manager Dan Palami for helping him secure permission from Salgaocar.
The Filipino-Spanish striker scored one of the Azkals two goals against Myanmar and is raring to play in the Philippines’ first ever Suzuki Cup home game.
“Boss, thank you very much for your attention to my [situation],” Guirado told Palami through Twitter.
After opening the group stage with a 2-1 loss to host Thailand, the Philippines came up with successive wins against Vietnam (1-0) and Myanmar (2-0) to finish second in Group A and advance to the knockout stage of the competition.
