Henares willing to compromise with Pacquiao
MANILA – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) chief is willing to compromise with Manny Pacquiao regarding his P2.2 billion tax case as long as the deal is legal.
BIR Commissioner Kim Henares said she is open to meeting the fighting congressman from Sarangani province to settle their differences.
“Lahat ng tax payer na may problema, maski saan mang part ng problema nila, p’wede namang makipagusap sa kin,” Henares said in an interview on dzMM. “Pero kung ano yung magiging result depends on what the law says.”
The BIR has garnished Pacquiao’s bank accounts and properties, prompting the Filipino boxer to cry foul.
The boxing superstar claimed the BIR’s move has left him financially paralyzed, leaving him no choice but to borrow money from his friends.
Henares, however, said she is willing to listen to Pacquiao’s pleas so long as the boxer makes the first move.
“P’wede naman ding makipagusap kami kung binigyan niya kami ng rason to justify themselves under Section 204 [of the Philippine Tax Code] , then it's something we can discuss,” she said.
Section 204 covers the authority of the BIR commissioner to compromise or credit taxes.
However, she maintained that the outcome of the supposed negotiation will be limited to provisions of the Tax Code.
“Kung ano 'yung resulta, it will have to depend on kung ano ang nasa batas,” said Henares.
