MANILA – Vietnam's football coach Phan Thanh Hung has resigned after failing to steer his team to the semifinals of the 21012 Suzuki Cup.

Vietnam, the 2008 Suzuki Cup champions, crashed out of the semis race after succumbing to Thailand (3-1) and the Philippines (1-0) in the group stage.

Thanh Hung, who still has a year left on his contract, took responsibility for his team’s failure.

“In preparation, we have received the maximum support of the Vietnam Football Federation,” he said in Suzuki Cup’s official website. “The players also gave their all, both when training and competing.”

“A number of factors led to the national team failing to qualify (for the knock-out stage). As the coach, I must take responsibility and I have recommended to the Vietnam Football Federation that I step down from the post.”

Vietnam was seeded first in Group A for having a highest FIFA ranking (138) in the cluster composed of Thailand (152), Philippines (143) and Myanmar (156).

But after being held to a 1-1 standoff by Myanmar, the Vietnamese team faltered against host team Thailand and rising Southeast Asian powerhouse, Philippine Azkals.
