Cotto: I would beat Pacquiao in rematch
MANILA, Philippines - Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto is confident that he will end up the winner should he have a rematch with Filipino boxing champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.
Pacquiao defeated Cotto in 2009 via a 12th round technical knockout. But the first few rounds of the fight were highly competitive, as Cotto was able to pressure Pacquiao.
The Filipino boxer took control of that fight in the middle rounds, as he was able to overwhelm Cotto with his speed and power, even knocking him down twice.
"I have no doubt about it," Cotto said in a Boxing Scene interview, when asked if he will beat Pacquiao in a rematch. "With the right encouragement and with the people that are now in my team, we have no doubt about that."
Cotto, who holds a 37-2 win-loss record, avenged his other defeat by stopping Antonio Margarito in the 10th round of their rematch last Saturday in Madison Square Garden.
The Puerto Rican boxer had overhauled his team before the Pacquiao match, and got little support from his corner at the time of the fight. But Cotto now has a new trainer in Pedro Diaz, who came up with an excellent game plan for the Margarito bout.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, is not keen on a rematch, saying that the boxers have already fought anyway, and Pacquiao still has "bigger fish to fry."
Pacquiao has said that he is hoping his next bout will be against undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. He has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with the Mayweather team for a possible mega-fight.
