MANILA, Philippines – World bantamweight champion Abner Mares is confident that he has what it takes to beat Filipino-American boxing star Nonito Donaire Jr.

Mares, who is coming off a successful rematch against Joseph Agbeko, said a matchup between him and Donaire would be good for fight fans.

"I think it would be a great fight and it's something the boxing fans would want to see. I feel I can beat him," Mares said in Boxingscene.com.

Donaire, known as "The Filipino Flash," is considered among the world’s best bantamweights, having won the WBC and WBO titles from Fernando Montiel.

Mares, on the other hand, is the IBF and WBC Silver bantamweight champion.

The two, however, failed to meet because Mares was part of the Showtime tournament, while Donaire fights for Top Rank Inc.

This prompted Donaire to climb to super bantamweight level instead.

"I would love to fight Donaire. He's a very good fighter and I want to be known as a guy that fights the best," Mares said.

Mares said he has yet to decide if he will follow Donaire in the super bantamweight ranks or stay as a bantamweight.

"I plan on sitting down and talking to my team and see if we will move up in weight or stay at 118lbs for a few more fights,” he said.
