Pacquiao's next foe must be ready, says Mayweather's pa
He may sound conceited but despite his expected bias, outspoken American trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. concedes Manny Pacquiao is now his own man in the sport of boxing.
This was what Mayweather told the daily morning radio show Sports Chat over Sports Radio 918 on Wednesday morning.
“Manny is the man right now. It all depends on who he chooses—if it’s Ricky [Hatton] or Floyd [Mayweather Jr.]. Of course, whoever makes more money for him, that’s who Pacquiao will choose. But whoever he chooses, he just needs to be ready to fight,” Mayweather said.
Mayweather said Oscar de la Hoya worked with the wrong people in his corner.
“Myself personally, … I would have to say I would put a big blame on his camp. Oscar should be training with me and they don’t train nothing like me,” said Mayweather.
“I’m gonna say it right here, it wasn’t a good performance for him at all. But I think if he fought with me, it would have been a different fight altogether.”
Mayweather added that if ever de la Hoya fights again and aims to get his redemption, a rematch with Pacquiao is his only way for payback.
“If he doesn’t want to come back and redeem himself against Manny Pacquiao, he must retire. All he would ever be known for is losing to a much, much, much smaller man, forever,” said Mayweather.
Mayweather also confirmed a report that his son Floyd Jr. tried to contact him and that the former pound-for-pound king will come out of retirement and fight Pacquiao.
Janelle Mayweather, the boxer’s cousin, said she received a call moments after Pacquiao dismantled de la Hoya last weekend.
“My niece said my son told her he wanted to fight Pacquiao next, and that he wants me to train him for the fight,” Mayweather said.
The plan is to reunite the Mayweathers and work as a team in preparing for Pacquiao.
