Darchinyan looks for Donaire rematch
MANILA, Philippines – Super flyweight king Vic Darchinyan is reportedly looking for a rematch with interim champion Nonito Donaire Jr., who knocked him out two years ago.
Darchinyan’s promoter Gary Shaw told Insidesports.ph that his ward is ready to fight Donaire if the Filipino “doesn’t run”.
Darchinyan, who holds the super flyweight titles of World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA), is scheduled to fight Mexican Tomas Rojas in California on Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
There’s bad blood running between Donaire and Darchinyan, especially after the Filipino knocked out the Armenian-born Australian in 2007.
In that fight, the Donaire tagged Darchinyan with a picture-perfect left hook to the jaw in the 5th round. The Filipino’s victory was declared by The Ring Magazine as “The Knockout of the Year” and “Upset of the Year” in 2007.
Darchinyan vowed that it won’t happen again the next time they meet.
“If I meet him [again], I'm gonna break him,” he earlier told sports writer Dennis Principe over Sports Chat radio show in dzSR.
Donaire, the WBA interim champ, said his foe is clearly bitter after the win.
“I knocked him out bad,” said Donaire. “And he was hurting because I took everything away from him; his perfect record, not being down, not being hurt or being cut. I took all of that away from him with one punch.”
