Penn outlasts Sanchez in UFC 107

Mir stuns Kongo in co-feature

MANILA, Philippines - UFC light heavyweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn successfully defended his title against challenger Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez in UFC 107 Saturday  (Sunday in Manila) in Memphis, Tennessee.

Penn survived the nightmare caused by Sanchez in their 5-round main event bout by technical knockout at 2:32 in Round 5, according to UFC.com.

The 30-year-old Penn improved his record to 15-5-1 while Sanchez slumped to 23 wins and 3 losses.

Meanwhile, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir dominated his co-feature event against French Cheick Kongo at the FedEx Forum.

Mir edged Kongo by submission (choke) at 1:12 in Round 1. He now has 13 wins and 4 losses. Kongo, on the other hand, has a 24-6-1 record.

In other UFC 107 matches, Jon Fitch won over Mike Pierce by unanimous decision while Kenny “KenFlo” Florian defeated Clay “The Carpenter” Guida via submission (choke) at 2:19 in Round 2.

Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve, meantime, won by majority decision over Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello. Alan “The Talent” Belcher scored a first round TKO over Wilson Gouveia at 3:03.

Matt “Handsome” Wiman and Johny Hendricks posted unanimous decision victories over Shane “Sugar” Nelson and Ricardo “Golden Boy” Funch, respectively.

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares edged Lucio “The Spartan” Linhares via submission (leg lock) at 3:21 in Round 2 while DaMarques Johnson triumphed by submission (choke) over Edgar Garcia at 4:03 in Round 1. Lastly, TJ Grant defeated Kevin “The Fire” Burns by TKO at 1:57 in Round 1.
