Weiss: Azkals have no time to mourn
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Azkals won’t have much time to grieve their Suzuki Cup loss to Singapore as they are scheduled to get back in training next month for the Challenge Cup qualifiers.
The Singapore Lions foiled the Azkals’ attempt to enter the Suzuki Cup finals by beating the Philippine side, 1-0, in the second leg of their semifinals encounter.
But Azkals' coach Michael Weiss said they will have to move on as they have to prepare for their next major tournament.
“We do not have too much time to mourn because in mid-January, we will have to start preparing for the AFC Challenge Cup,” said Weiss in Suzuki Cup’s official website.
The German coach said he hopes that the lessons learned from their defeat to Singapore will be useful when they campaign for the Challenge Cup.
The Azkals finished third in the 2012 edition of the Cup, beating former champions India and Tajikistan along the way.
Weiss said he hopes the Philippines will be able to hurdle the tournament qualifiers and join the final group for the 2014 Challenge Cup.
“Our goal is to win our qualification group and to get top place on home soil so that we can be one of the top eight sides that qualify for the final in 2014. Hopefully, we can win that tournament and qualify for the Asian Cup in 2015,” he said.
