Paciencia, Docena rule Singapore chessfest

Caoili triumphant in UK

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino wood pushers Enrique Paciencia, Jedara Docena and Arianne Bo Caoili emerged as big winners in separate chess events in Singapore and United Kingdom.

International Master Paciencia secured a draw against fellow IM Lim Yee-Weng of Malaysia in the 9th and final round of the Commonwealth Open (Singapore International Chess Festival 2009).

The Leyte native thus took the top honor after finishing the tournament unbeaten with 7.5 points on 6 wins and 3 draws.

Woman National Master (WM) Jedara Docena toppled Jung Young Hoon of Korea to dominate the Singapore Challengers section also with unbeaten record of 8.0 points on 7 wins and 2 draws.

Fellow wood pusher Paolo Bersamina drew his final match against compatriot Mari Joseph Turqueza to finish into a tie for 2nd to 3rd placers with Rezon Yanuar of India after tallying 7.0 points apiece.

The Filipino campaign in Singapore Chess Festival is supported by National Chess Federation president Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr.

In London, Fil-Aussie Woman International Master (WIM) Arianne Bo Caoili continued her winning run in the Women's Invitational tournament (London Chess Classic) after beating Woman Fide Master Sabrina Chevannes of England.

The win has virtually made Caoili the over-all winner in the event being held at the Olympia Conference Center, Kensington in London with a total of 7.0 points in 8 outings going to the final round. – by Marlon Bernardino
