Melindo to headline Pinoy Pride 11
MANILA, Philippines -- Milan "El Metodico" Melindo will headline a Pinoy Pride card anew when he faces off against Mexico's Juan Esquer in the 11th installment of the boxing series on January 28, 2012.
According to Sun Star Cebu, the undefeated Melindo (25-0, 9 knockouts) will defend his World Boxing Organization intercontinental flyweight crown against Esquer.
Esquer (27-9-2, 21 KOs) is a former world title contender, having lost to World Boxing Association flyweight champion Hernan Marquez and former world champion Ivan Calderon.
"Esquer is an experienced fighter who fought some of the best. It will be a great fight as Milan needs to keep up his ranking," ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said.
Melindo was hoping to face former light flyweight champion Giovani Segura in 2012 and has said that he wants a shot at a world title.
Aldeguer said there is no rush for the 23-year-old prospect, however.
"We will look at other options, but we are in no rush for a world title as Milan is still very young," he said. "However, if an offer to fight for a world title comes from other organizations, we will definitely grab it."
