Diaz on Dream Match: 'Pacman proved me wrong'
Former WBC lightweight champion David Diaz admitted that People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao has proved him wrong in the sensational “Dream Match” with Oscar de la Hoya on December 6.
Diaz, who visited the Philippines to attend Pacquiao’s birthday bash in General Santos City, revealed to ABS-CBN correspondent Gretchen Fullido that he picked the taller de la Hoya to win over the Filipino.
“To be honest with you, I had picked de la Hoya to win,” said the former world champion. “Boy, was I wrong.”
Diaz was among those who thought that Pacquiao would have problems in fighting at a bigger weight.
The Filipino, however, proved otherwise as he decisively beat a much taller fighter in de la Hoya.
Diaz was so astounded by Pacquiao’s performance that he called up the Filipino right after the fight and reportedly said: “Who are you? You're too fast. You're unbelievable. Are you human?”
Want a rematch?
When asked if he would like to have a rematch with Pacquiao, Diaz just answered with a laugh.
“Not right now! Hehe, Gotta collect myself, get a little courage underneath me and test the waters again...see what I have left,” he said.
Diaz, who lost to the Filipino champion in nine rounds last June, relented that he would fight Pacquiao if given the chance.
“I would love to fight with Manny again because he's the top guy to fight in our division... he's the guy to beat right now,” he said.
The well-mannered former champion thinks there is only one way to beat Pacquiao.
“To beat Manny you have to catch him on a day off... and I don’t think Manny has days off.”
Diaz also thinks Pacquiao should face Britain's Ricky Hatton first before former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"As a fan, not as a fighter, I would like for him to go after Hatton and then Mayweather," he said.
He also praised the Filipino's trainer coach Freddie Roach for his masterful job on Pacquiao. Diaz said the American trainer has turned the Filipino champ into a well polished fighter.
"You gotta go with Freddie and see what he thinks, because he planned everything right and he's handling Manny pretty well," Diaz said.
