The possible match up between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton has taken an unexpected twist after reports that former world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to “un-retire” for a rematch with the British superstar.
Hatton’s lawyer Gareth Williams told the Associated Press that the former pound-for-pound king has sent feelers about his wish to fight his client again.
"Hatton is considering his options at the moment," Williams was quoted as saying. "We need to sit down and talk to all parties to consider what is best for Hatton."
Mayweather Jr. beat Hatton December last year before announcing his retirement from the sport.
Williams, however, said Hatton’s camp would likely prefer a match up with Pacquiao, who has just beaten international boxing star Oscar de la Hoya.
"Our preference is Manny Pacquiao because we think that is a great fight. Ricky has made no secret of the fact he wants to take on the best and Pacquiao is regarded as the best. We're more than happy to make that fight but it has got to be on acceptable terms," he said.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had said that there are ongoing negotiations between the camps of Pacquiao and Hatton for a May 2 fight.
Reports earlier came out that Mayweather Jr. plans to come out of retirement to challenge Pacquiao, who is dubbed as today’s pound-for-pound king.
Mayweather’s father Floyd Sr. told Grand Rapids Press reporter David Mayo that his son expressed desire to fight again after witnessing Pacquiao’s spectacular win over de la Hoya.
"My niece said my son told her he wanted to fight Pacquiao next, and that he wants me to train him for the fight," he said.
But this did not sit well with Hatton who earlier insisted that he should be next in line for Pacquiao.
Hatton said he has earned the right to fight the People’s Champ following his victories over Juan Lazcano and Paulie Malignaggi.
“I’ve put the hard work in and would like to get the chance to take on Manny,” said the reigning IBF/IBO junior welterweight king.
“I’m not surprised Floyd is considering a return — but I’d be disappointed if he got in ahead of me,” said Hatton.
