RP’s Takayama heralded as new billiards idol

Fil-Japanese Mike Takayama was hailed as the new pool star following his successful run in the recently concluded Search for the New Billiards Idol at the Superman Sports Bar in Libis, Quezon City.

According to BilliardPhilippines.com, the 19-year-old Takayama subdued Bugsy Promotions stable mate Russian Petiza, 7-4, in the tournament finals.

“Matagal kong hinintay at pinagsikapang manalo ng isang malaking tournament, at masayang-masaya ako na natupad ko ito ngayon,” said Takayama.

Apart from being crown as the new billiards idol, Takayama also received the P40,000 top prize.

“Alam kong malayo pa ang tatahakin ko para maabot iyong level nina champ Efren (“Bata” Reyes), pero masaya ako at nakuha ko itong isang hakbang patungo doon,” he said.

The win has given Takayama the right to be seeded in all Villar Cup legs next year.

Before beating Petiza, Takayama outplayed Michael Feliciano, 7-3, Joey Pardales, 7-2, and Elmer Haya, 7-2. 

He also bounced back from a 4-6 deficit to edge Roberto Dy, 7-6, in the quarterfinals, before beating Richard Pornelosa, 7-4, in the semis.
