Marquez may still sue Roach for defamation
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez is still considering filing a defamation suit against Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach, saying he will have to pay for the consequences of his statements.
Marquez, who defeated Roach’s top ward Manny Pacquiao via a sixth-round knockout last December, 8, told Boxing Scene that he may still file a case against the trainer, who commented that the Mexican’s body did not look “natural.”
Roach also said he will “kiss Marquez’s ass” if the Mexican tested negative for performance-enhancing drugs.
“Roach told me if I would come out clean in the anti-doping tests, he would kiss my ass,” Marquez said. “The Nevada Commission has announced that both Pacquiao and I were negative for doping.”
“That means Roach has to kiss my ass, and then some. He openly said that I had doped, and now he has to pay the consequences,” he said.
Roach had declined to comment on Marquez’ alleged use of performance enhancing drugs in the post-fight press conference, while Pacquiao’s own strength and conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, commended Marquez and his team for effectively applying science in their training camp.
“It was science and Juan Manuel Marquez that beat Manny Pacquiao,” Ariza said in an interview with Dog House Boxing.
“He’s the same intelligent fighter and technician, but it was the exercise and nutrition that turned him into the relentless fighter who could withstand Manny’s punches, and the be able to generate that kind of explosiveness with one punch,” he added.
