MANILA, Philippines – Trainer Robert Garcia is full of praises for his top fighter, Nonito Donaire, after “The Filipino Flash” dominated Mexican warrior Jorge Arce in their super bantamweight clash last Saturday in Houston (Sunday in Manila).

“I think Nonito just looked sensational,” Garcia said in an interview with Boxing Scene. “He is the best, one of the best, if not the best in the world, and I am very happy with his performance.”

“He is always very dedicated in the gym, he is very smart inside the ring and he did what he had to do,” he said.

Garcia said he only had a few reminders for Donaire in between rounds, since “The Filipino Flash” was in complete control of the fight.

“There were times when he threw that left hook and it was a bit too wide, and he was missing the left hook when he was coming in with his right hand,” Garcia explained. “So we told him to shorten the left hook or switch it to an upper cut.”

“But besides that, Nonito is very smart in the ring and he controls the fight, and he does his job very smartly inside the ring,” he added.

Donaire fought four times in 2012 and won them all, with each win being more impressive than the previous one.

He defeated Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. via split decision in February, then took a unanimous decision win over Jeffrey Mathebula in July. He then knocked out Toshiaki Nishioka in nine rounds last October before fighting Arce.

Donaire has said that he plans to take the rest of the year off and rest, although many are now speculating about what his next step will be.

While Donaire can remain at the 122-pound division and take on fellow champions Abner Mares and Guillermo Rigondeaux, some think he may be better served looking for big money fights at the 126-pound division.

“I don’t want to force him to do something that he doesn’t feel comfortable doing,” said Garcia, noting that his fighter is very comfortable at his current weight class. “But if he does (move up in weight) I know he’s gonna be very successful also.”
