MANILA, Philippines – Controversial boxing trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. does not think Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao can bounce back after his shocking knockout defeat at the hands of Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez.
Mayweather Sr. told Dog House Boxing that he had Pacquiao winning the early rounds, except for the third, and was impressed with the Filipino’s movements.
“Pacquiao did little something that was changing the fight – he was doing some fainting, fainting his head, he was fainting there, fainting here, he was making Marquez come at him, and then Pacquiao was clocking him, Pacquiao was killing him with punches,” Mayweather Sr. said.
Pacquiao was knocked down in the third round, but he also forced Marquez to take a knee in the fifth. He controlled the pace and the action in the sixth round, but walked into a short right punch by Marquez with just a second to go. Pacquiao crashed face first into the canvas and was unconscious for around two minutes.
Mayweather Sr. believes the Filipino will never be the same after experiencing such a devastating knockout.
“I would have to say no,” Mayweather Sr. said when asked if Pacquiao can still be an elite fighter. “When you get knocked out like that, pretty much everything is over.”
“When you get knocked out like that, when you start fighting and stuff, and when you get hit with a good punch, another good shot, another good punch, you say, ‘Oh (expletive),’” he added.
“You realize you escaped that one, and you realize that you can’t escape another.”
Mayweather Sr. added that Pacquiao “is not going to be the same fighter he was.”
The trainer even suggested “the Pacman needs to shut it down” and “go be the Hawaiian President or whatever it is.”
“He has done all that he could in boxing,” Mayweather Sr. said. “If he fights Marquez again, Marquez is real tough, so I think the same thing could happen again.”
“He does have another option. He’s got a contract drawn up that say they have another rematch. My opinion is that it’s your money or your brain, and who wants to catch brain injury if you got money?” he added.
