Dos Santos confident he can submit Velasquez
MANILA, Philippines – Light heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos said he’s pretty much prepared for anything Cain Velasquez has to offer when they meet for the second time in UFC 155.
Dos Santos is aware that Velasquez, who is essentially a wrestler, might opt to take him down during their rematch that will take place on December 29.
The champion prefers to fight standing up, but he said he knows what to do if Velasquez takes him to the ground.
“I know Cain's game. I watched his fights a lot and I've studied him. I know his strategy and if he takes me down and really holds me down, I'm ready for my first submission in the UFC,” the Brazilian native said in the UFC 155 conference call.
Dos Santos first fought Velasquez in UFC on Fox in 2011, when he challenged the Mexican-American for the light heavyweight title. He came out triumphant, knocking out Velasquez in one minutes and four seconds of the first round.
But a post-fight report revealed that Velasquez injured his rotator cuff approximately a week before the fight.
This time, he’ll be coming in injury-free and more prepared against Dos Santos.
But Dos Santos merely shrugged it off.
“It doesn't affect me at all,” said Dos Santos. “I know how he fights. He's got good boxing. I've just got to fight my style of fight which means a lot of pressure and a lot of offense.”
