Gasol brothers relishing first competitive meeting
MADRID – Pau and Marc Gasol will not do each other any favors when their respective teams, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Memphis Grizzlies, meet later on Monday, the Spanish brothers said.
The pair have gone up against each other before in friendlies and in training for the Spanish national team but this will be their first meeting in a competitive match.
"It's not going to be like when we were kids playing at our grandparents' place," Pau Gasol told Spain's Marca newspaper.
"It's the NBA basket that's fixed to the wall this time."
Marc Gasol added: "It will be strange before the match but when it starts, the only thing on your mind is beating your opponent.
We are pretty competitive and we both want to win at all costs."
Pau said the brothers had been looking forward to the clash since the NBA calendar was published in August and the date had been "flashing red" for both of them.
"When you are competing of course you are programed to try and win but at the same time you are aware of the fact that you are playing against your own brother," he said.
"For me, it will be a new experience in which I will discover how I will feel. The same for him."
Marc said the brothers had not made a bet with each other about the outcome.
"When the calendar was published he was needling me about the match and I did not even want to know the date," he said.
"I don't know how it's going to be but it will definitely be fun. I am looking forward to making the most of it, to be able to play and see myself out there with Pau."
