Marquez wants to see Pacquiao-Floyd showdown
MANILA, Philippines – Count Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez among those who want to finally see a boxing showdown between Filipino icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and unbeaten American Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Speaking to Boxing Scene, Marquez said he believes Pacquiao should be seeking a mega-fight against the American instead of gunning for a fifth fight against him.
“I hope they make the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.,” said Marquez, “to erase any doubts.”
Marquez said a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao – who for a time were considered to be the two best fighters in the planet – would finally answer the question that boxing fans have long asked.
“I think it’s going to be a great fight, and the people will be very pleased because they won’t be in suspense on what would have happened if these two fighters had faced each other,” said Marquez.
As for a fifth fight with Pacquiao, Marquez once again shot it down.
“The fifth fight is not going to happen,” he insisted. “It’s not even worth it because the people are very happy with that knockout.”
Marquez knocked out Pacquiao when they fought for the fourth time in December 2012.
It is unlikely that Marquez will get his wish of a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown, however. The American last weekend said a fight with Pacquiao will never happen, as the Filipino still fights under the banner of Top Rank Promotions.
Mayweather said he will never again work with Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum, likely shutting the door on the mega-fight.
