Pau wins battle of Gasol brothers
NEW YORK – Kobe Bryant scored 36 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 105-96 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday in a game that marked the first NBA meeting between brothers Pau and Marc Gasol.
The Spanish pair had played against each other in friendlies and in training for the Spanish national team, but Monday's game was the first time they'd faced each other competitively.
"Somebody had to lose tonight, right?" the Lakers' Pau Gasol told reporters. "I'm happy we came out victorious because we needed this win extremely bad to continue to pursue our goals.
"But I'm sorry that on the losing end were the Grizzlies and my brother."
Pau had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Lakers in his return to Memphis, his former team before joining Los Angeles in February.
A mixture of cheers and boos greeted Pau, the older Gasol in the pre-game introductions. The Grizzlies then presented a video tribute during a timeout, with the crowd showing their disapproval throughout.
Marc, in his first NBA season, had eight points and seven rebounds for the Grizzlies, who led 93-88 with 3:08 to play.
