MANILA, Philippines – Filipino teenage boxer Johnreil Casimiro, the new World Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight interim champion, arrived in the country on Thursday to celebrate his victory as well as the holiday season.

Casimiro, 19, won over Colombian Cesar Canchilla at the National Stadium in Managua, Nicaragua over the weekend.

The teen fighter, also known as “Quadro Alas,” knocked out Canchilla in Round 11. He remained undefeated at 14-0 with 8 KOs. Canchilla, on the other hand, slumped to 28-3 with 22 KOs.

He told Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing.com that he “dreamed daily of winning the title as a Christmas gift” for himself, his family and the Filipinos.

The Casimiro vs Canchilla fight was featured in the event held in honor of former fighter and Nicaraguan mayor Alexis Arguello, who allegedly committed suicide in July.

According to InsideSports.ph, prized fighters who watched the bout at ringside included former world champions Marco Antonio Barrera and Pipino Cuevas, along with WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon.

Calderon vs Casimiro?

Casimiro related that he worked very hard for his fight against his Colombian foe with trainer Nonito Donaire, Sr.

“Training hard, training all the time and praying always,” he told PhilBoxing.com. Donaire even commented that he was confident that his ward would prevail via KO.

Meanwhile, Casimiro is reportedly setting his sights on Calderon, who has 33 wins (with 6 KOs) and 1 draw.

Casimiro said he and Donaire want to take on the undefeated Puerto Rican. The teen fighter also hopes that he could fight in Manila if ever he will be given the chance to face Calderon.
