Marquez's win lifted Mexican boxing: Morales
MANILA, Philippines – Mexican legend Erik Morales was full of praises for Juan Manuel Marquez following his countryman’s sensational victory over Filipino icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao last December 8.
In an interview with Boxing Scene, Morales said Marquez’s victory over Pacquiao was “the most significant win for Mexico in 2012.”
”This year, 2012, was a year filled with good things and bad things, but ultimately, we received a win that warmed the hearts of everyone (in Mexico) and lifted Mexican boxing,” Morales said.
“That was the victory of Juan Manuel Marquez. I’m happy for him, because we know how difficult it is to fight Pacquiao,” he added. “Marquez showed great strength, despite his age.”
Morales and Marquez both have a long history with Pacquiao. “El Terrible” defeated Pacquiao via unanimous decision when they fought for the first time in 2005, although he would be knocked out in their two subsequent rematches.
Meanwhile, Marquez settled for a draw against Pacquiao in 2004 and lost two controversial decisions in the rematches, but got his vindication when he knocked out Pacquiao in the sixth round of their fourth encounter.
