MANILA, Philippines -- Boxing fans have deemed the trilogy bout between Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and his great rival, Juan Manuel Marquez, as the sport's "Event of the Year."

According to a RingTV.com poll, 44.6% of their readers considered Pacquiao-Marquez III as the top boxing event of the year, with the rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito coming in second (24.2%).

Floyd Mayweather's return to the ring against Victor Ortiz ranked 3rd, with 12.5%.

Pacquiao won the trilogy bout via a highly controversial majority decision, despite many boxing observers saying Marquez was the better boxer during fight night. Like their first two bouts, Marquez confounded Pacquiao with his counterpunching and footwork, and the Filipino champion failed to register a knockdown.

"The fight drew a sellout crowd of 16,368 to the MGM Grand's Garden Arena, and sold the most tickets (15,498) for a boxing match since the Oscar De La Hoya-(Floyd) Mayweather event in 2007, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission," said RingTV's Dough Fischer.

"The massive turnout generated $11,648,300, the ninth all-time best boxing gate in Nevada history," he added.

The trilogy bout was a great hit in Marquez's home turf of Mexico, where an estimated 37.2 million fans watched on the Azteca network. Pacquiao-Marquez III was the most watched boxing event in the country, exceeding Pacquiao's fight against Antonio Margarito, which drew 32.4 million fans.

The fight also broke Pacquiao's personal record in terms of pay-per-view buys, as it garnered a reported 1.4-million PPV buys.

It exceeded Pacquiao's previous personal best of 1.3-million PPV buys for his one-sided rout of Shane Mosley last May 2011.

Pacquiao-Marquez III was also voted by RingTV readers as "Robbery of the Year."
