Trainer on PED issue: Don't blame Marquez

MANILA, Philippines – Juan Manuel Marquez’s knockout victory over Manny Pacquiao is legit and should not be tarnished by steroid allegations, one boxing trainer said.

Joel Diaz, boxing coach of Timothy Bradley, told Boxing Scene’s Chris Robinson that people are just being unfair when they accuse Marquez of using performance enhancing drugs (PED).

“Don't blame Marquez. A lot of people are talking about him using performance enhancers. He just did his homework… that's all,” said Diaz.

“He did a great job, and he really put in some time [in training], he did his homework and got a good grade.”

Marquez has been hounded by allegations of drug use since he has been associated with admitted PED peddler Angel “Memo” Heredia.

This has tainted his sixth-round knockout win over Manny Pacquiao and cost him the Fighter of the Year Award in sports outfits like ESPN and Boxing Scene.

But Diaz said Marquez won by knockout because he followed the right training regimen.

Moreover, the Mexican fighter also has an acute sense of timing and is familiar with Pacquiao’s style.

“They know each other very, very well. Manny Pacquiao has a habit [of lunging in] and he always does it in fights. Honestly, I didn't think it would happen that way but it made sense. Marquez really, really timed that punch. He knows him so well. When [Pacquiao] lunged in [Marquez] let go of that right hand and he got him,” Diaz said.
