Pacquiao sues Mayweather for doping allegations
MANILA, Philippines (1st Update) – Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao has sued Floyd Mayweather, Jr., his father, and some members of the American’s camp ahead of their planned March 13 bout for alleging that he was taking performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).
Pacquiao filed a defamation complaint through lawyer Daniel Petrocelli in a federal court in Las Vegas, Nevada on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila). Petrocelli is best known for winning a death civil lawsuit against O.J. Simpson in 1997, noted The Grand Rapids Press.
“Calling a professional athlete a cheater is the most serious charge one can make and in today's world, accusing an athlete of using performance-enhancing drugs - however baseless and lacking in evidence - is toxic,” the lawsuit said as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The lawsuit named Mayweather, his father, Floyd Sr., and uncle Roger Mayweather as defendants. It asked for damages in excess of US$75,000.
Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar de la Hoya and Richard Schaefer were also named as having “stated publicly that Pacquiao has used and is using performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids.”
According to the lawsuit, Mayweather told The Guardian that he had “great doubt as to the level of fairness I would be facing in the ring that night." He also remarked over the radio in October, “'cause we know the Philippines got the best enhancing drugs.”
The suit added: “The truth did not stop Mayweather and the others… That is because they are motivated by ill will, spite, malice, revenge and envy.”
Pacquiao, in addition, issued his “last official statement” on Team Mayweather’s doping allegations: “As I have stated before I have never used anabolic steroids nor do I even know what they look like… I view using steroids, synthetic growth hormone, or any other illegal or banned substance as cheating.”
It remains to be seen how the defamation suit will affect negotiations for the Pacquiao-Mayweather super fight, which is already in limbo because of the drug testing issue.
Reputation
Petrocelli told Reuters that Pacquiao “simply could not allow these false, reckless and malicious statements to go unanswered.”
He also explained that the $75,000 is just the minimum amount needed in order to sue in court.
“The damages in this case for Pacquiao's reputation are in the tens of millions of dollars, not including punitive damages,” added the lawyer. “He had no choice but to file this law suit to protect his good name and reputation which has been earned after years and years of hard work.”
Petrocelli also remarked that there is no basis for the doping allegations against Pacquiao.
“Whether or not the fight goes forward, whoever he fights next, he's not going to sit by and let people publicly accuse him of being a cheater.”
'Unsalvageable now'
Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions, told The Press that the super fight is “not salvageable now.”
He also told The Los Angeles Times that he does not see the bout happening now. “Positions are hardening ... Manny's fit to be tied. He's very angry.”
But he seemed to say that there was still hope when he said, “It might be best to visit this fight later in 2010.”
Arum is reportedly eyeing to negotiate a clash with another ward, World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman.
It was earlier reported that the Top Rank big boss was ready to negotiate with former International Boxing Federation (IBF) light welterweight champion Paul “Paulie” Malignaggi.
Not over until it’s over
Meanwhile, Mayweather’s adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, refused to jump to conclusions.
“It ain't over 'til it's over,” Ellerbe told The Press.
“The clock is ticking… It'll get resolved, one way or another. Either he [Pacquiao] is going to step up to the plate or he isn't,” he added.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) stepped into the drug testing hullaballoo, ordering Pacquiao and Mayweather to submit to urine tests within 48 hours or else they would face possible fines or suspension.
Pacquiao submitted himself to a urine test Wednesday in General Santos City. He said he is confident that he will past the test.
The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight is slated to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The weight limit is set at 147 lbs. while the purse split is 50-50. Pacquiao’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title would be at stake. – With reports from Agence France-Presse, Los Angeles Times, Reuters, David Mayo of The Grand Rapids Press, and Anne Santos, ABS-CBN News SOKSARGEN

@ Adel - Hitler Hates Pacquiao
LOL! Ah, man. That was freakin hilarious man. Activate Bobby Pacquiao. LOL!
What movie was that from?
@ atong
Idol? Floyd's not my idol. I never said he is. Nah, man I'm old school. I like Chavez, Ali, Leonard. I don't like Floyd. He maybe the biggest a-hole in boxing (hate to admit it) but he is that damn good and all boxing experts and analysts will tell you that too. I don't like him, but I can't say he's not good. I'm not trashing Manny Pacquiao. I like Manny.
Yes, I'm an American married to a beautiful Filipina. I have two Masters degree but yes you're right I sound uneducated. And I apologize for that. I don't even know you but I'm bashing you and it's not fair to you. I'm sure my wife would not appreciate what I just did, it'd be like I'm bashing her as well. I talk a lot of friendly smack to my buddies when it comes to sports but I shouldn't have talked like that to you.
Anyways, let's just start over and talk good boxing, how about that?
I agree Manny shouldn't fight Malignaggi but not because of his style. But rather, it doesn't really do anything or prove anything for Manny. I would rather for Manny to wait for Mosley (if he beats Berto) and unify the welterweight division. And oh, I just heard that Manny's not fighting Paulie anymore but he'll more than likely fight Yuri Foreman.
Who do think Manny should fight? What do you think of him fighting Foreman?
Phillips, Now it is clear. It
Phillips,
Now it is clear. It hurts you to know the truth - that your idol is scared of Manny Pacquiao, the No. 1 boxer in the planet. And that is why you reacted negatively to what I wrote. You must be an american married to a lovely filipina, Phil!
Anyway, as you wrote let us talk about boxing. That's what I want, too. But let us not be rude to others if we don't agree to what they write. No name-calling, please. Name-calling (e.g. dumb---,assh---, etc.) is only done by people who are uneducated and had a poor upbringing and bad temper.
Long Live, Manny Pacquiao!
Happy New Year to all!

Anyways man, I'm not here to learn or teach english. Whatever..
"STYLES MAKE FIGHTS". Floyd Mayweather is not a runner. He's a counter puncher, a technical fighter. If you call his style "as running and scared" then you'd also be calling these great fighters as "runners and scared" - Pernell Whitaker, Jerry Quarry, James Toney, Marvin Hagler, Evander Holyfield, Juan Manuel Marquez, etc. Those fighters (if you even know any of them) I mentioned have the same style as Mayweather. Counter punchers are slippery in the pocket defensive style fighters. They use their well rounded defence to avoid or block shots. When their opponent throws a punch they use their defense to avoid blows and then they return one. They mostly fight at a close range; but some counter punchers remain at the distance of an out fighter. They're the type of fighters who preys on an opponent's mistakes. To be successful using this style the fighter must have well rounded overall skills, a sharp boxing brain, and while blazing speed isn't always necessary, good speed at the least is required.
A boxer-puncher is a well-rounded boxer who is able to fight at close range with a combination of technique and power, often with the ability to knock opponents out with a combination and in some instances a single shot. Instead of winning by decision, they tend to wear their opponents down using combinations and then move in to score the knockout. Notable boxer-punchers include Manny Pacquiao, Sam Langford, Henry Armstrong, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson, Tony Zale, Archie Moore, Carlos Monzon, Khaosai Galaxy and Oscar De La Hoya.
Counter punchers fighting each other are boring (most recently the Mayweather/Marquez fight) but if you match their style with a boxer/puncher style like Manny Pacquiao, then you'll be watching a great classic fight (Example: Pacquiao/Marquez I & II). Now, if you truly know boxing then you'll understand why everyone in the boxing community want the proposed Pacquiao/Mayweather fight to happen and why they consider it "The Fight". The best offensive fighter versus the best defensive fighter.
Pre-fight mind games are nothing new in boxing in boxing man. Muhammad Ali was a master of boxing mind games.
PEDs right now are getting so sophisticated and advanced that drug testing protocols in boxing is outdated and inadequate. The God Father of Steroids Victor Conte will tell you that. The roids this guy has developed were designed to beat drug testing (urine or blood).

LOL! thanks for the unnecessary correction professor loser. I said "something we don't already know" not "we don't know already". There's a difference dumba$s. Go back and read my thread again. Well, since you opened that can of worms, it's "until you learn how to write" NOT "until you learned how to write". What you're trying to say implies that I don't know how to write yet, so it hasn't happened yet, but "LEARNED" implies that I already know how to write. Whatever, it doesn't matter. I still understood what you meant by "learned how to read" even though you didn't say it right. It's not about "how" you write it, it's about "what" you write.
Huh, I thought this was boxing forum. I didn't know this was an English class. Anyways, I'm not gonna go into english and grammar correction coz my lovely Filipina wife might call me a racist for it.
Why don't we talk boxing? Are you game?
PhillipsBS, You should be the
PhillipsBS,
You should be the one not to write again until you learned how to write correctly. Here's what you wrote - - "But if you do, please tell us something that we don't know already". Does it make sense? Use YET instead of ALREADY, mister! We don't know yet - - not We don't know already! O, boy!
