MANILA - Cebu-based conglomerate Norkis Group has tapped technology giant IBM to provide and implement a smarter business system to link all its 300 branches nationwide.

The Quisumbing led company has chosen to adapt IBM DB2 which was the same software that state-owned pension fund Government Service Insurance System claimed was the cause of the crash of its computer system. (IBM and GSIS are currently in a bitter legal war. Read related stories here and here.)

Norkis information technology head Ronald Alfeche said the company chose the IBM DB2 database since it offers excellent performance alongside enterprise-strength backup and recovery solutions.

“It is able to handle the very large data sets that we expect to generate, and gives us room to grow as the business itself expands,” Alfeche said.

Norkis also opted for an IBM Systems Storage DS4700 storage system to provide application and data storage. The DS4700 can be expanded to a total of 33.6TB, offering significant growth options for the immediate and near future.

Norkis deputy chairman Luis Quisumbing said the company has embarked on a root-and-branch review of its business systems to harmonize, standardize and simplify the entire infrastructure.

“Norkis Group is growing fast, and we see great opportunities for both retail and financing. To help us take these opportunities, we have committed to world-class industry best practices for demand forecasts, on-time delivery, and business performance information,” Quisumbing added.

He pointed out that the integration of all its business functions into a single and centralized system would enhance group-wide productivity and flexibility as key business data and information would be automatically generated to provide higher levels of business performance visibility at senior executive level.

With a centralized enterprise resource planning solution, the company would be better equipped to forecast demand, increase on-time delivery, reduce credit investigation lead-times and make realistic and achievable commitments.

Norkis started operations in 1962 as the country’s exclusive manufacturer and distributor of Yamaha motorcycles. It has since diversified its product range and expanded to multiple branch locations.
