MANILA, Philippines - British author Martin Jacques is mistaken if he believes that Philippine relations with China is all about the South China Sea.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario issued this statement following Jacques' assessment that the Philippines is acting like a proxy for the United States in Asia.
Jacques has said the Philippines should look at the big picture and resolve the territorial dispute with China without clinging to the US.
"I think Mr. Jacques has a measured knowledge of the Philippines. We would like him to understand our foreign policy is crafted on the basis of how we can best promote our national interest. I think he is mistaken if he believes that the South China Sea is the sum total of our relations with China. It is not and we have made that very clear," del Rosario said in an ANC Headstart interview.
He added: "As a matter of fact, there is an agreement between President Hu Jintao and President Aquino that we will pursue our bilateral agenda aggressively and we will abstract the contentious issues and deal with that separately and that's what we are trying to do."
