MANILA - The Department of Education (DepEd) defends tuition hikes approved for hundreds of schools this school year.
Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali of the Department of Education says the number of schools granted tuition hikes account for only a small percentage of the total number of schools that applied for higher fees.
He adds private schools have the right to determine the amount of tuition they charge students because they also need to raise teachers' salaries and improve facilities.
Umali adds the DepEd has an existing program that extends a 10,000-peso tuition assistance to deserving students every year.
Close to 60 percent of all private school students were beneficiaries of the tuition assistance last year.
