EDC: Still unsure when Bacman turbine can be fixed

MANILA, Philippines -- The Energy Development Corp. has said it doesn't know if or when one of the turbines of its Bacman I geothermal plant can be repaired.

Bacman I accounts for the 110-megawatt of Bacman's total capacity of 130 MW.

There was cracking of blades in unit 1 two weeks ago, only days after Bacman was recommissioned. The fragments damaged unit 2 and prompted a shutdown of the first unit as well.

EDC said it has already removed some blades from the turbine and has sent them to Australia for a test. The firm said it should receive the test results by next week, after which, the company would restart it at low capacity for four weeks before re-testing.

The Lopez-led firm said it is studying whether to order all new parts of the turbine. ANC Business Nightly, March 15, 2013.
