MANILA, Philippines - Veteran actress Pilar Pilapil was known for being one of the most beautiful women during her time.

The Cebuana beauty started out as a beauty queen, having won the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title in 1967. She represented the country in the Miss Universe pageant then.

She joined show business and made her mark as one of the most sought after leading ladies.

Pilapil starred in films opposite leading men such as Andy Poe (brother of "The King of Filipino Movies" Fernando Poe, Jr.) and Comedy King Dolphy.

She won 2 best actress awards, one for the movie "Imelda, Ang Uliran", and another for the film "Napakasakit Kuya Eddie".

Among the men she got romantically linked with were Dolphy, the late movie star Fernando Poe, Jr., and the late former Vice President Salvador Laurel.

In 2006, she released an autobiography entitled "The Woman Without a Face," chronicling her life in show business and in private life after she went on semi-retirement.

She also dabbled in politics when she ran for senator in 2004 as an independent candidate. She lost.

Pilapil has a foundation named Pilar Pilapil Foundation, which helps battered and abused women, among others.

She became a born-again Christian in 1995, and married Christian pastor Bernie Peñas in 2002.

Pilapil has a daughter, Pia, who also had a brief stint in show business in the 90s.

Pilapil still accepts showbiz commitments. She has appeared in 3 of ABS-CBN's hit TV series: "Lobo," "I Love Betty La Fea," and "Agua Bendita."

Just hours before the carjacking and stabbing incident on Thursday, Pilapil was at a restaurant on Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City for a press conference on the re-staging of the play "The Vagina Monologues" set to be held at Teatrino in Greenhills on April 29 and 30.
